The event created a warm atmosphere for
members to connect and set the stage for a series of activities designed to
promote unity and inclusivity. Over the following months, WMF Australia’s
leadership focused on growing the organization, welcoming more families,
organizing cultural programs, and filling key positions within the committee.
Building on the success of 2022, Onam
2023 was celebrated in September with unmatched enthusiasm, drawing over 220
attendees. The festival, deeply rooted in Kerala’s heritage, was reimagined for
the diaspora, bringing the vibrant spirit of Onam to Australian soil.
WMF Australia created an immersive Onam
experience, ensuring the event stayed true to the traditions of Kerala. The
highlights of the event included:
The heart of any Onam celebration is the Onam Sadhya, a sumptuous vegetarian feast served on banana leaves. The Sadhya is not merely a meal but a cultural expression of Kerala’s culinary heritage. The feast at Onam 2023 included:
o Over 20 traditional dishes, such as avial, sambar, rasam, kalan, olan, pachadi, payasam, and more.
o The meticulous preparation and the use of authentic Kerala spices transported the attendees back to their homeland, offering a taste of nostalgia and pride.
o Volunteers worked together to serve the dishes in the traditional way, creating a sense of unity and collaboration among the attendees.
A highlight of Onam celebrations is the symbolic appearance of King Mahabali, the mythical ruler whose reign is celebrated as a time of prosperity and equality. At WMF Onam 2023:
o A community member dressed as King Mahabali greeted attendees with warmth and blessings, spreading joy and reminding everyone of the festival’s essence: unity, generosity, and gratitude.
o Mahabali’s presence delighted children and elders alike, providing a moment of cultural connection and a cherished photo opportunity for families.
o Thiruvathira Dance: Women dressed in traditional Kerala attire performed the Thiruvathira, a graceful group dance that embodies feminine elegance and rhythm, symbolizing the joy of Onam.
o Pulikali (Tiger Dance): A vibrant and playful performance where dancers painted as tigers captivated the audience with their lively movements.
o Children’s Performances: The younger generation enthusiastically participated in singing, dancing, and storytelling, presenting themes rooted in Kerala’s folklore and mythology.
Traditional Onam games and competitions were organized to bring the community together in a spirit of camaraderie and fun. Some of the activities included:
o Vadamvali (Tug of War): Teams enthusiastically participated in this timeless game, embodying the strength and unity of the community.
o Kalamadi (Musical Chairs): Both kids and adults participated in this engaging activity, adding laughter and cheer to the event.
o Pookalam Competition: A traditional Pookalam (floral carpet) competition allowed families to showcase their artistic skills by creating intricate floral designs, a hallmark of Onam celebrations.
The venue was adorned with traditional Kerala decorations, including Nilavilakku (oil lamps) and hanging Thoranams (floral garlands), creating an authentic and festive ambiance. An exhibition area displayed Kerala’s iconic cultural artifacts, traditional attire, and literature, fostering a deeper appreciation for the region’s heritage.
